Cyril was born on 13th December 1893 in Tufnell Park and baptised at St George’s, Tufnell Park, on 4th February 1894. His father, Frank Edward (b. 1868), and mother, Louisa Elizabeth Stiles, nee Kite (1868-1950), had three other sons: Frank (b.1893), Percy (1898-1918) and Hector (b.1902).

In 1901 the family were living at 31 Bedford Road, East Finchley and Frank was employed as a printer's traveller. At the time of the 1911 Census they were living at 12 Queen's Cottages, Squires Lane, Finchley, and Frank was an insurance agent.

When Cyril enlisted, he was working as a railway clerk. He fought and died in action in the Gallipoli campaign. This was an attempt to force Turkey out of the war, to relieve the deadlock of the Western Front in France and Belgium, and to open a supply route to Russia through the Dardanelles and the Black Sea.
