Frederick John Smith was the son of George Frederick Smith, a boot retailer from Finchley. Nothing else is known of his life before the war.

Frederick had enlisted as a Private in the London Regiment and was commissioned into the Bedfordshire Regiment in 1916. On the surface, he appears to have served in the 8th battalion, then the 6th battalion, before moving into the 5th battalion. He died of wounds received at the Battle of Albert.
