James Reuben Sharpe was born in Wood Green in 1896 and baptised at St Mark, Noel Park on the 13th March 1896. His father James was a general labourer and had a total of seven children with his wife Emily, two of whom died in infancy. James' known siblings were: Edith (b.1898), Albert (b.1905), Frederick (b.1907) and Annie (b.1909). At 15, James was employed as a general errand boy and was living with his family at 132 Cromwell Road, New Southgate.

Nothing is known of James' military service, except that he enlisted in Haringey. He died of wounds.
