Leslie Edwin Kingham was born in 1896 to Frederick William Kingham (1864-1945), a police constable, and his wife Emily (1863-1913). Leslie was baptised on 14th April 1896 at St James the Great, Friern Barnet. He had four siblings; Ethel (b.1889), Edgar (b.1892) and Albert (b.1900), though Albert and one other, unknown, sibling, sadly died in childhood.

By 1911, the family had moved to Squires Lane, Finchley. Frederick had changed jobs to being a police pension insurance agent, whilst Leslie worked as porter to a silversmith’s firm and Ethel was a domestic servant.
